Gloomy Sports Day

As far as sports days go, Tuesday 21st October shall go down as a gloomy one for CMMSS.  We managed to lose two matches in two different disciplines against the same opposition.  Worse still both matches were played at home!

Our tormentors were Anse Ger Secondary School who before that day had enjoyed very little success against CMMSS.  For a bit of perspective, that school was defeated twice by CMMSS – including a 3-1 hammering in the grand final – in last year’s inter-secondary U-19 football competition.

The annihilation job was started in the morning in the Under 15 Inter-secondary School 25 Over Cricket Competion when CMMSS were bowled out for a measly 76 in 16.2 overs.  At one point the score was 39 for one!  Anse Ger stormed to that target losing only 3 wickets and facing only 12.5 overs.  This included an aggressive knock of 41 not out from 34 balls by Ronaldo Joseph.  Ironically the winning runs came from a towering six which landed on the roof of the CMMSS form 5 block.

Later in the afternoon in the Inter-secondary School U-19 Football Competition at the Dennery Football Field, Anse Ger completed the rout with a 1 – 0 victory over the home team.

The game was a scrappy affair with the lack of preparation on both sides glaringly evident.  The first half ended goalless with CMMSS attacker Mycus Descartes missing a golden chance to open his account in the final seconds of the period.  Despite nimbly sidestepping the Anse Ger goalkeeper he only succeeding blasting his right-footed shot against the crossbar with the goal gaping.

Anse Ger opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the second half following some confusion in CMMSS defense.  Despite a late surge by the home team in which the crossbar was brushed and a last minute chance was squandered by CMMSS striker Mitchum Francis,  the miserable day was complete at the final blast of the referee’s whistle.
