The second category “Talent” was aptly named as the contestants performed a range of skits exuding the poise, confidence and stage personality associated with seasoned Broadway actresses. Those watching were given an insight into life in the past and some of the local customs that existed in those olden days.
When the time came for the young ladies to grace the stage in their national costumes they all enchanted the crowd with their own beauty and elegance along with the splendor of their gowns.
Finally in the “Pawol Gwan Moun” Installment, the contestants eloquently deliver a monologue entirely in Kwéyol based on previously assigned topics.
All of the young ladies performed creditably but it was evident from early on that one of the babies of the group – form one student Johnasia Stanislas – possessed sublime stage talent. She captivated the audience early and had them enthralled throughout. Although the final scores were fairly close, it was no surprise that she got the nod of approval from the judges for the La Wen Kwéyol crown. Not contented with the crown, she captured the Best Introduction, Best Creative Wear and Ms Photogenic prizes also. In second place was Shontell David and she ensured that Johnasia did not make a clean sweep of the available prizes by winning the Best Talent award. Third placed Alysa Joseph was the judges choice for the Pawol Gwan Moun award.
Overall it was a fantastic and well organised show. There were no incidents of note among the crowd and as mentioned earlier, competition was keen. Even with Johnasia’s brilliance, the other beauties were by no means blown away. Once again congrats Johnasia, CMMSS La Wen Kwéyol 2014. Bring on 2015!
